Cantebury Poem The Prologue

It happened in that fine time of autumn
Hopes were high but my luck had hit bottom
All alone for the runaway I was
No one minded then and no one still does
But one fateful night under the North Star
I heard a jingle of bells not too far
Raising my head up from the lentil tree
Rolling out from the mist, what did I see
But troupe of horse drawn wagons moving west
I stayed quiet and low, thinking it best
The vardos slowed to a halt, breaking for camp
With light from the moon and a small oil lamp
I could see their number was three and ten
A bad amount now as it was back then
There was singing and dancing all that nigh
